Andy Serkis Reveals If He’d Direct A Star Wars Project

Date:

Andor actor Andy Serkis reveals that he would be interested in the opportunity to someday direct a Star Wars project. Serkis has had the unique opportunity to portray two separate characters in the Star Wars universe, with first one being Supreme Leader Snoke in the sequel trilogy through the use of motion capture. However, due to his face being covered in CGI as Snoke, Serkis was given the opportunity to return to Star Wars again with his normal appearance when he was revealed in Andor episode 8 as Kino Loy, Cassian Andor’s (Diego Luna) fellow inmate and potential ally against the Empire going forward.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Serkis has made a name for himself through his motion capture performances, most notably as Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth franchise and as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy. However, in recent years, Serkis has also begun to take on more work as a director, where he often utilizes his experiences with motion capture technology. This was especially evident in both 2018’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and in 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage. While physically appearing as Ulysses Klaue in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, Serkis also worked on the film as a motion capture consultant, with the technology being used to bring the titular villain to life.

It is clear that Serkis has a lot of experience working in major franchises from both behind and in front of the camera. In an interview with Screen Rant, Serkis expresses his interest in continuing to be part of the Star Wars universe, but through a directing role in the franchise. Check out the full quote below:

“Oh, I would [direct a Star Wars project]. Yeah, of course. It’s the most incredible universe, and any director would love the opportunity to do that. Yeah, hopefully at some point.”

What Corner Of The Star Wars Universe Suits Serkis Best?

Without saying too much on the topic, it appears that Serkis is enthusiastic about the idea of stepping into the director’s chair of a Star Wars project. With the galaxy of the Star Wars universe always expanding with every new film or series, there is a lot of space for Serkis to bring his own vision into the franchise. Given his own personal filmography and experiences, chances are that a Serkis-helmed Star Wars project would not be one like Andor that is grounded in realism, but instead would heavily use technology to introduce new worlds and beings previously not seen in the franchise. Hopefully, Serkis’ experience with motion capture technology and CGI can open the door to some incredible concepts and visuals.

Star Wars fans can only hope that if Serkis does take on his own project, he will be able to push the boundaries of what can be visually achieved in the Star Wars universe. However, in the meantime, Serkis’ return in Andor is a good sign that he is not yet done with the franchise after his role in the sequel trilogy. It remains to be seen if Disney will ever offer Serkis the chance to direct his own project, but it is safe to say that if the time comes, audiences will be in for a visually stunning entry to the galaxy.
