How To Beat Mucktorok In Zelda: TOTK (Water Temple Boss)

There are several Bosses that Link will face in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom when attempting to complete the different temples. For the water temple, the main boss will be the Mucktorok. This is a version of the Octorok enemy that will cover itself in sludge to imitate a deadly shark for most of the fight.

Unfortunately, one of the things that makes this boss fight so difficult is that Link will be unable to do any damage without first washing off the sludge. Luckily, however, in each temple, Link also receives a companion that can specifically assist him with the temple’s boss. In this case, Prince Sidon of the Zora in Zelda: TOTK will help wash the sludge off.

Link should prepare for this fight by using some of the Recipes in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to make some Stamina boosting meals and a couple of Hasty Elixirs. Additionally, he should have several arrows on hand in addition to Splash Fruit or Chuchu Jelly.

How To Beat Mucktorok’s First Phase

The Mucktorok Shark in Zelda TOTK

For those that have already taken on the Wind Temple Boss in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, this fight should be significantly easier than that. For the first phase, ensure that Link is heading into this fight with a strong melee weapon and shield to help speed things along. The Sludge Shark will mainly stick to the arena’s perimeters, so this should make avoiding it a little easier. It will have a couple of different primary attacks; the first is a charge attack where the Sludge Shark will target Link head-on. Link should primarily focus on dodging this attack, as he will be unable to deal damage.

When it begins to spew Sludge across the arena, jump over the Sludge to avoid taking damage and do the same with the shockwave, it will create with its other attack. Link can also attempt to get behind it when it begins spewing Sludge if he is in the position to do so. The main way to beat this Zelda: TOTK enemy is to have Sidon remove the sludge whenever possible, exposing the Mucktorok for a short period, and Link can run up and attack. The most suitable time to attempt to remove the sludge will be when it is stationary, making its sweeping sludge attack. Note that when Mucktorok is exposed, it will not attack.

Link can also use his new Fuse Ability to shoot Splash Fruit or Chuchu Jelly to clear off the Sludge, but it will require two hits to do it this way, whereas Sidon can do it in one. Plus, saving the materials and arrows for later in the fight is better.

How To Beat Mucktorok’s Second Phase

Once the Mucktorok has reached half of its original health, a cutscene will appear in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and the second phase of this boss fight will begin. Unfortunately, the arena will now be covered with Sludge which Link will need to clear or dodge to avoid getting stuck and making himself vulnerable. The Mucktorok Shark will quickly begin its attacks again, but this time it will also occasionally cause Sludge to rain down in drops that can hurt Link if they hit him directly.

Try taking a Hasty Elixir or some Stamina-boosting food for this portion of the fight to help Link quickly maneuver around the sludge pools and dodge the Shark’s attacks.

Once the sludge is washed off, the Mucktorok will attempt to dive into the available piles of Sludge around the arena, which Link cannot follow into. Instead, try Fusing arrows with explosive items in Zelda: TOTK, such as a Bomb Flower, to lure it out, at which point Link can attack it directly. Also, if Link can time a jump properly and equip his bow, he can create the slowdown effect, which can be used to attack the Mucktorok as it’s jumping into a Sludge pile and knock it off track. Continue this pattern of exposing the Mucktorok and attacking it with melee weapons until its health is depleted.

Once the Mucktorok reaches the end of its health, the fight will be over. Link will then be able to retrieve some dropped Octorok materials as well as a Heart Container. Note that the Heart Container will not automatically be collected, so be sure to grab it. Finally, the real benefit of this fight will be the newly acquired Sidon Companion Avatar which Link will be able to utilize on the rest of his journey in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom along with the other Companion Avatars collected from other temples.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is the anticipated follow-up to Breath of the Wild, released in 2017. A rare occurrence in Zelda titles, Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel instead of loosely connected. In Tears of the Kingdom, Link will take to the skies and learn about a mysterious kingdom in the clouds. Additionally, he will discover the secrets of the dark ones that dwell below and above the earth. The sequel is being built on the same engine as the original, with unique physics tools again being utilized. However, little about the plot and gameplay is known.
