A Doctor Who fan has recreated the entirety of Gallifrey in the popular sandbox game Minecraft, letting other fans explore the planet for themselves.
A creative Minecraft player has replicated the planet Gallifrey from Doctor Who in the game. The popular sci-fi television show sees alien protagonist the Doctor travel the entirety of time and space, encountering trouble wherever they go.
Reddit user tucker-ed-out (via Game Rant) has built the home planet of the Time Lords in Minecraft. The build is “fully explorable” and features every known location on the planet, such as the War Council room of Gallifrey High Command, as seen in the episode ‘The Day of the Doctor.’ Other notable locations include the Cloisters and the Barn where the Doctor spent part of their childhood. And although unavailable for download, the world is currently visitable via tucker-ed-out’s server cosmosminecraft.net. Official skins based on Doctor Who have previously been released for the sandbox game, joining other Minecraft DLC like a new Batman content pack.
Minecraft Allows Fans To Perfectly Recreate Pop Culture Settings Like Gallifrey
The opportunity to explore such a vast location from pop culture is a rare thing in Minecraft, although not as rare as it could be. Many players have produced similarly impressive builds over the years, from sprawling cities to recreations of other fictional lands. Minecraft’s sandbox nature, as well as the ability to install mods and custom texture packs, means that, although time-consuming, it’s definitely possible to build such large-scale projects, and fans have been taking advantage of the game’s boundless creative options since it first launched all the way back in 2011. In the past, for example, fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s have seen one Minecraft player building Security Breach’s Mega Pizzaplex.
Although the screenshots tucker-ed-out provides seem relatively peaceful, Gallifrey has had a turbulent history. A recurring location in Doctor Who since its first appearance in 1969, Gallifrey and the Time Lords eventually became embroiled in the devastating Time War against the Daleks. This led to the planet’s supposed destruction ahead of the show’s 2005 revival, although the 50th anniversary special had the Doctor rescue Gallifrey from this fate. More recently, Gallifrey has been destroyed once more, this time at the hands of the rogue Time Lord the Master. Doctor Who as a whole has had an incredible impact on pop culture, and this has led to some interesting crossovers with other popular brands and franchises. For example, it has been announced that a Doctor Who collaboration set for Magic: The Gathering will be released in 2023.
This build is extremely impressive to see. tucker-ed-out has evidently spent a great deal of time ensuring that their Gallifrey is accurate to the original. It is similarly clear to see that they must have a deep knowledge of Doctor Who and an excellent eye for detail in order to replicate the planet so thoroughly in Minecraft. Fans of the franchise are certain to be amazed by the build, and will no doubt be eager to explore the planet for themselves. This incredible build joins many other similar recreations of popular television settings, such as a rebuild of The Simpsons’ Springfield in Minecraft.
