Is GOTG 3’s Adam Warlock A Hero Or Villain? James Gunn Responds

Date:

Writer/director James Gunn responds to the question of whether Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock is a hero or villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Amidst uncertainty about the nature of the character’s role, James Gunn explains whether Adam Warlock is a hero or villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Despite being depicted as a clearcut hero in Marvel Comics, Adam Warlock was created by Ayesha during Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s post-credits scene for the purpose of destroying the titular team. In the third film, the Golden Gladiator will be properly introduced and played by Midsommar‘s Will Poulter. The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer continued to paint Adam Warlock as a bad guy, leading to questions about whether he will actually be a villain, or if his role will remain faithful to the comics.

During a recent interview with EW, Gunn responded to the question of whether Adam Warlock will be a hero or villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The writer/director says the Golden Gladiator is more of a traditional superhero compared to the ragtag crew of space adventurers he will encounter, although “hero might be pushing it,” Gunn admits. Adam Warlock’s encounter with the Guardians in Vol. 3 will also make for “an interesting juxtaposition with where we’ve been so far,” Gunn says.

What To Expect From Adam Warlock In GOTG 3

High Evolutionary, Adam Warlock, and Ayesha Queen of the Sovereign

Adam Warlock is one of the more complex characters the MCU has introduced in a while, so he can’t easily be classified as a hero or a villain. He was created by Ayesha to destroy the Guardians, though he’s unlikely to actually carry out that purpose. While he might lean a little into his antagonistic side during the beginning of the story, Adam Warlock is expected to come around and join the Guardians by the end of Vol. 3.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3′s main villain is clearly the High Evolutionary (played by Chukwudi Iwuji), which strengthens the argument for why Adam Warlock won’t also be given a full-fledged villain arc. Instead, he will most likely team up with the Guardians in order the defeat the greater evil. A mad scientist specializing in the study of evolution and genetic alteration, the High Evolutionary is responsible for turning Rocket into a killing machine, and has connections to the other team members as well.

While Adam Warlock is more of a traditional hero with superpowers compared to the ragtag band of space adventures, Gunn’s comments suggest hero isn’t actually the best word to describe him, hinting at some deeper layers at play. Instead, Adam Warlock’s ambiguous nature and advanced superpowers should make for some interesting and unique interactions with the Guardians. Only time will tell exactly how Adam Warlock’s MCU story unfolds when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 releases in theaters next year.
