The trailer for Moon Knight draws in massive numbers, beating the viewership numbers for Loki, WandaVision, and Hawkeye in its first 24 hours.

The first trailer for Marvel Studios Moon Knight drew in a massive number of 75 million viewers. Introduced in Werewolf by Night #32 in 1975 by creators Doug Moench and Don Perlin, Moon Knight has been one of Marvel’s most popular heroes as the character has been a member of The Avengers, The Midnight Sons, and the Heroes for Hire. Moon Knight will be making his debut into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in his own series, on March 30, 2022.

The series stars Oscar Isaac as the titular hero who is living under the name of Steven Grant as he uncovers a hidden mystery about his past and multiple identities, including the alias Marc Spector and the Moon Knight hero persona. Moon Knight is the first new MCU project since Spider-Man: No Way Home and will be the first Marvel Disney+ series of 2022, leaving a three-month gap between its premiere and Hawkeye‘s finale. After much anticipation, the first trailer for Moon Knight premiered during ESPN’s broadcast of the NFL Wildcard Match between the Arizona Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams.

The trailer was a massive hit, as according to THR, Disney insiders are claiming the trailer for Moon Knight generated just over 75 million views, 52 million online, and 23 million from the broadcast, in its first 24 hours. That is greater than the viewing numbers for the trailers for Loki (60 million), WandaVision (52 million), and Hawkeye (41.5 million). While Moon Knight did not top the 125 million views for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier trailer, that trailer premiered during the Super Bowl. The series also had the highest engagement of any Marvel series so far, with 263,000 mentions, beating the first content release for WandaVision (241,000) and even the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian (221,000).

Even after a whole year of Marvel Studios series, it appears audiences still can’t get enough of the universe. Moon Knight is just one of many MCU series coming to Disney+ in 2022. The series will be followed by She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion. There will also be two holiday specials for the MCU in 2022 with the first being a Halloween one, rumored to be centered on Werewolf by Night, the very same character that Moon Knight made his first appearance fighting, and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which will premiere during the 2022 holiday season.

All other MCU series on Disney+ have been based on characters audiences have already met in the films, so there was a certain level of audience familiarity to draw in viewers. Moon Knight will mark a first for the MCU, introducing a new hero in their own series first, but this formula has worked for Marvel in the past as they have turned relatively unknown characters like Shang-Chi, The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Captain Marvel into massive stars with their solo films. The massive response to the trailer indicates that Moon Knight could be a breakout hit for the MCU.
