Mortal Kombat 2 Has 4 Perfect Villains (Not Just Shao Kahn)

Date:

Not much is known about Mortal Kombat 2’s plot, but the Mortal Kombat (2021) sequel already has four perfect villains. After a self-contained first movie that completely skipped the tournament, Mortal Kombat will return for what is expected to be a “bigger” film as revealed by Cole Young actor Lewis Tan. Mortal Kombat 2 will be the first Mortal Kombat sequel since Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, meaning that it will have to find the balance between expanding the world and delivering a solid movie that Annihilation never did. After a Sub-Zero-centered reboot, it will be interesting to see what other corners of the Mortal Kombat universe the sequel will tackle.

While Sub-Zero will likely return in Mortal Kombat 2, Scorpion’s revenge storyline was already the focus of the first movie. As such, even if Noob Saibot appears in Mortal Kombat 2, he will likely not be the main villain. The same applies to Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero, who could be introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 but whose story could end up becoming way too similar to Bi-Han’s in the first movie. Whether Mortal Kombat 2 will feature a tournament is difficult to say, but having a traditional Mortal Kombat tournament would sure change the dynamic from the first movie when it comes to antagonists. Here are the most likely Mortal Kombat 2 villains.

Shang Tsung Is Expected To Return For Mortal Kombat 2

Shang Tsung Mortal Kombat

Perhaps Mortal Kombat’s most famous villain, Shang Tsung had a significant role both in the 995 Mortal Kombat and the 2021 reboot. That difference is that, whereas Liu Kang killed Shang Tsung in the 1995 movie, Shang Tsung survived at the end of the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot. Unlike previous iterations, Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat (2021) was not interested in following the rules of the tournaments set by the Elder Gods. Instead, as soon as Shang Tsung found out that Raiden was putting together a roster of Earthrealm champions, the soul-eater villain decided to send his own champions to destroy Raiden’s before the tournament even began.

The fact Shang Tsung was willing to break the rules of Mortal Kombat so easily was deemed as a Mortal Kombat plot hole, but it can set up Shang Tsung’s role in Mortal Kombat 2. Now that Raiden is aware of how far Shang Tsung can go, the Thunder God could perhaps make a plea to the Elder Gods regarding Shang Tsung’s actions. Though that would be dangerously similar to the plot of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, it would help introduce the Elder Gods and their roles in the Mortal Kombat universe. The rivalry between Raiden and Shang Tsung is essential to Mortal Kombat and can be explored in Mortal Kombat 2.

Shao Kahn Can Be Mortal Kombat’s Final Boss

Mortal Kombat Shao Kahn Statue

One of video games’ most recognizable final bosses, Shao Kahn only appeared once in a live-action movie. Almost three decades after Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Shao Kahn is now closer than ever to his big-screen return. While Mortal Kombat (2021) does not mention Shao Kahn, the iconic Mortal Kombat villain is referenced through a statue. Going by Mortal Kombat’s Shao Kahn statue, the villain will likely keep his more humanoid look whenever he appears in this new Mortal Kombat iteration. It is difficult to say, however, whether Shao Khan would be a mainly CG character or if would be an actor in a suit similar to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Either way, Mortal Kombat 2 asks for Shao Kahn. While Shao Kahn is often associated with being Mortal Kombat’s final boss, which he was in three different Mortal Kombat games, the character could work as the villain for the second installment. With the promise of Mortal Kombat 2 being bigger than Mortal Kombat (2021), the sequel will have to open itself for the franchise’s large lore – a lot of which has to do with Shao Kahn. In fact, for Shang Tsung to return in Mortal Kombat 2 satisfactorily, Shao Kahn has to be involved on some level – even if as a background villain.

Once again recognizing the risk of being too similar to Annihilation, Mortal Kombat 2 could see the Elder Gods having to oversee what is happening on Earth with Shao Kahn ignoring the rules of the tournament to take over Earthrealm. The Mortal Kombat lore establishes that Shang Tsung is but a pawn in Shao Kahn’s plans, something that Mortal Kombat (2021) overlooked and that the sequel could explore. Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat 2 would not necessarily mean that the villain could not return in a potential third movie as the final boss of a Mortal Kombat trilogy, especially if he was to have a limited role in Mortal Kombat 2.

Shinnok In Mortal Kombat 2 Can Further Develop Scorpion

Shinnok Mortal Kombat

Even if Mortal Kombat 2 decides to save Shao Kahn for a potential Mortal Kombat 3, the movie could still explore the larger Mortal Kombat lore by featuring the Elder God of Death Shinnok. One of the most powerful and dangerous characters in the Mortal Kombat universe, Shinnok has been adapted to the big screen in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, though he had a more human look and a considerably different backstory. In the Mortal Kombat canon, Shinnok fell victim to his own desire for destruction and became the leader of Netherrealm – an important Mortal Kombat world that the 2021 reboot did not mention.

By skipping what happened with Hanzo Hasashi between the death of his family and the arrival of Scorpion at the end, Mortal Kombat (2021) ended up ignoring a large part of Scorpion’s story and, as a consequence, of the Mortal Kombat lore as a whole. Those who are familiar with the Mortal Kombat games can infer how Hanzo returned as Scorpion in Mortal Kombat (2021), but those who do not know much about the character were probably confused by the lack of context on Scorpion’s story. If Scorpion returns in Mortal Kombat 2, then the sequel will have to better explain the character – which would ask for Shinnok to be in the sequel.

Hanzo’s time at Netherrealm is what leads to the rise of Scorpion. While the one responsible for Hanzo being resurrected and becoming a Netherrealm specter in the current Mortal Kombat game timeline is Quan Chi, no story about Netherrealm would be complete without its leader Shinnok. Scorpion’s own journey, either before his revenge against Sub-Zero in a flashback or after, could lead to Shinnok being introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 as a dangerous force smart enough to deceive Scorpion and other characters. Whereas Shao Kahn would be a more physical challenge for the Earthrealm champions, Shinnok would be a more intellectual, manipulative threat.

When it comes to manipulative Netherrealm antagonists, Shinnok is not the only villain Mortal Kombat 2 could feature. Quan Chi, who often works for or with Shinnok, would likely be incorporated into the Mortal Kombat sequel if it decides to explore Netherrealm. If the new Mortal Kombat movie franchise continues to follow the Mortal Kombat reboot timeline, then it has to feature Quan Chi at some point. A powerful Netherrealm wizard, Quan Chi was responsible for the creation of Scorpion. In fact, in the current Mortal Kombat timeline, Quan Chi was responsible for killing Scorpion’s family and blaming it on Sub-Zero – a rather tragic storyline that Mortal Kombat 2 could adapt.
