Nike x Off-White Dunks: Virgil Abloh Unveils His Biggest Nike Project Yet

Date:

Back in the summer of 2017, Virgil Abloh and Nike unveiled “The Ten,” a collection of the Swoosh’s most iconic silhouettes, each artfully remixed under the red-hot designer’s Off-White label. It was the sneaker collaboration heard around the world. The frenzy for those Helvetica-printed kicks feels a little distant now, but it is hard to overstate the uproar of hype surrounding the partnership. In part, that’s because it never quite stopped—in the years since, Abloh and Nike have released a slow drip of highly collectible one-off sneakers: some Dunks, an elite running shoe, a high-top Blazer, and so on. Now, Abloh and Nike are back for another mega-collection—a whopping 50 different styles in total—solely focused on the Nike Dunk.

In what is officially dubbed the “Dear Summer” collection (although sneakerheads have taken to calling it “The 50”), the duo is offering up an unprecedented number of sneakers. It focuses exclusively on the low-top Nike Dunk—reimagined through Abloh’s arty deconstructed lens, of course. The sneaker is offered with variations in the finishing details and colors across the materials, laces, and that trademark glossy zip tie. (All of the sneakers are shown with a white upper, except for a lonesome black option.) Even the glittery foil-like Swoosh logo, a motif we saw on a limited-edition Air Force 1 that was produced in partnership with the Museum of Modern Art, makes a return. Details surrounding the collection’s official release are scarce at this point, but expect more on that front to trickle out in the coming weeks.

It feels fitting to finally see the Dunk have a massive, look-at-me collaboration built around it. The style wasn’t originally included in “The Ten,” but that inaugural collection released before the once-forgotten Dunk became one of the hottest sneakers on the planet. (Not to mention, Abloh’s profile has somehow continued to skyrocket since then.) Both the designer and the sneaker are as famous as they’ve ever been—which is to say, getting these kicks won’t be easy, but copping Abloh-designed sneakers never is. At least this time, you’ll have a whopping 50 different styles to try and get your hands on.
