Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Ewan McGregor Says He Uses The Force In Real Life

Disney’s Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor admits that he actually uses his character’s Star Wars Jedi Force powers when out in public.

During a recent interview, Star Wars prequel trilogy and Obi-Wan Kenobi star, Ewan McGregor, revealed that he has often pretended to use his character’s Jedi Force powers in public. The Golden Globe award-winning actor will star in the highly anticipated Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which is slated to premiere on the streaming service on May 25, 2022. For McGregor, it is the first time in 17 years that the actor returns to the Star Wars universe since the release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

McGregor plays the titular character of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming six-episode limited series, a role he first played in the initial prequel trilogy entry, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, in 1999. In the new Disney+ series, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi keeps a watchful eye over a young Luke Skywalker on the desert planet Tatooine, while simultaneously evading elite Jedi hunters from the Empire during his exile. Fellow prequel trilogy star, Hayden Christensen, is also reprising the iconic role of Anakin Skywalker’s Darth Vader in the big budget series.

While being interviewed by EW, McGregor was asked if he has attempted using any of his famous character counterpart’s Jedi powers in real life. McGregor admitted that he has, in fact, pretended to use Jedi Force powers to move things in normal everyday situations while in public. He enthusiastically shared, “I do it with doors!” as he demonstrated the finger-slash-Force move that his character Kenobi has used in previous Star Wars films. “I like to do that with automatic doors just for my own amusement.” McGregor amusingly elaborated by saying, “I always do a little Jedi move for the doors and I have occasionally been caught doing it. You know, like at the supermarket or something when I’m wheeling my trolley out and I do a little…” as the legendary actor again acted out one of the fan favorite Jedi moves. Read more of what McGregor said below:

“It’s just always for my own [amusement], because it makes me laugh, but occasionally I’ve been caught doing that, and that’s kind of embarrassing. It’s difficult not to, isn’t it? It’s fun. If the timing is right, it feels very powerful.”

As far as the mind tricks, McGregor admitted that although he has jokingly been accused by others in the past of using Jedi mind tricks, he has not done that in real life and does not possess such skills. This is exemplified by the reaction his children have given the actor when attempting to use the mind powers at home. McGregor explained, “My kids are totally impervious to the whole Jedi mind trick. They don’t care. It doesn’t work on them.”

Fans everywhere will be pleasantly surprised to discover that one of their favorite Star Wars actors is, in some ways, just like countless other fans around the world when not on a film or TV set. It also shows that McGregor seems to have a genuine love and joy for the Star Wars mythos and indicates how closely he has held his love for that world throughout the decades. It is an affinity that will likely carry over on screen when audiences everywhere get to watch McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi in action once again in the upcoming Disney+ series.
