Massive Entertainment’s open-world game, Star Wars Outlaws was officially revealed at the 2023 Xbox Showcase. The cinematic trailer saw introduced fans to Kay Vess, a cunning scoundrel who initially seems to be on the run from the Empire before embarking on a galaxy-spanning adventure to attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen, all in an effort to start a new life.

It had previously been rumored that Star Wars Outlaws would let players explore a huge, seamless open-world map that was akin to that found in No Man’s Sky. While the trailer didn’t show gameplay to confirm these claims, it did offer players a glimpse at some of the iconic Star Wars locations they will be able to explore over the course of Kay Vess’ story, including ones from the sequel trilogy such as Canto Bight.

Tatooine Will Be Appearing In Star Wars Outlaws

Han Solo frozen in Carbonite being transported on Tatooine

As pointed out by StarWarsOnly on Twitter, one brief moment in the trailer showed Han Solo in Carbonite being transported. Not only does this let players know that the time period of the game will be somewhere in the year between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, but it also reveals that one of the locations Kay will be visiting will be Tatooine as the transportation clip shows Tatooine’s distinct twin suns in the distance.

After being frozen in Carbonite in Cloud City, Han Solo was transferred to Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine by Boba Fett. However, this delivery was not straightforward, as the War of the Bounty Hunters comic books showed the Crimson Dawn stealing Solo as bait for a trap before Boba Fett reacquired him, meaning that players might come into contact with this conflict first hand during the game.

Why Tatooine Makes Sense As A Star Wars Outlaws Location

Tatooine is somewhat of a Star Wars mainstay, and Luke Skywalker’s home on the Outer Rim of the galaxy has been visited plenty of times in recent Star Wars media, so its appearance in Star Wars Outlaws shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Obi Wan once described the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine as a “wretched hive of scum and villainy,” and Luke stated that it is “the planet that is farthest” from any potential bright center to the universe.

Despite the Empire building the Death Star in the Outer Rim, and many Rebel Alliance bases being situated within this territory, crime syndicates such as the aforementioned Hutts were able to dominate entire areas with the Empire’s blessing. With this in mind, Tatooine and the Outer Rim seems like a fitting location for Kay Vess’ story given her social standing in the galaxy. With the Galactic Empire on the heels of the Rebel Alliance in this time period, the criminal underworld is thriving, and Kay seems to be taking full advantage of this as she “plays [the syndicates’] game“.

The first trailer for Star Wars Outlaws certainly looks to be telling an interesting, new kind of Star Wars tale in gaming that isn’t centered around Rebels, Jedi, or the Empire, but instead, someone just trying to survive in the middle of the galactic conflict. Players won’t have to wait long to find out more, and hopefully see some gameplay showcasing some of the explorable Star Wars locations, as the title was confirmed to be appearing at the upcoming June 12 Ubisoft Forward event.
