Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes isn’t set to have many main human characters, but one person really needs to return. While the apes have always been the main characters of the franchise, each entry has had a few key humans, although their numbers have dwindled with each subsequent installment. While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems to be taking the series in a new direction, it should take the perfect opportunity to bring back a human from the reboot trilogy.
War for the Planet of the Apes was a time of change for the trilogy, with it initially concluding the story of the series. Not only did Caesar tragically die, paving the way for his son Cornelius to take over in the next installment, but it also showed the effects of a mutated strain of the Simian Flu. Rather than killing people, this virus took the ability to speak away from humans while also turning them into savage, feral creatures. However, one human character was able to hold off the worst symptoms of the Simian Flu, and there’s reason to believe she could be brought back for the fourth movie.
Nova Was A Character In The Original Planet Of The Apes
War for the Planet of the Apes introduces a character named Nova, a young girl that tags along with the apes. Due to the effects of the Simian Flu, Nova isn’t able to speak, but nevertheless, the apes develop a fondness for the young child. Nova joins the apes on their journey for a new home, with her remaining in the oasis at the end of the film. Nova is a great character in War for the Planet of the Apes, but as it turns out, she’s actually a character in the original 1968 film.
Nova was an adult human in 1968’s Planet of the Apes that astronaut George Taylor finds among the apes. She becomes a love interest for George, but overall she is pretty similar to her iteration from the reboot trilogy. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will take place several years after the previous film, meaning that there is a chance it could feature an adult Nova. This would allow the reboot to finally tell the story of the original film, giving Nova a much larger role in the story.
How Nova Can Play Into Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Story
Nova could be key to the story of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in several big ways. The most obvious is that she could bridge the gap between the apes and the humans. After the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, it makes sense that the apes will be more distrustful of humans than ever before. However, their fondness for Nova could be the reason that the two species mend their hatred, showing that they’re not so bad after all.
Another possibility is that Nova could act as a guide in the forbidden zones. Planet of the Apes‘ forbidden zones are often remnants of human societies, with it being heavily hinted that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will explore these areas. Since Nova is the only human in the ape clan, she could help them explore the forbidden zones, possibly attempting to explain everything. There is tons of potential for Nova in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, meaning that it would be a great idea to have her return.
