The Farzi series has been written and directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. The Raj and DK duo also holds the credit for making another brilliant web series “The Family Man”. The other writers of this series include well-known writers Sita Menon and Suman Kumar. It was released on the Prime Videos platform on 10th February 2023 consisting of 8 action-packed episodes having a run time of 1 hour approximately. The show also includes songs that have been created by various artists.
• The series’ lead cast includes a prominent actor from the Tamil industry Vijay Sethupathi and a famed Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor. Farzi in literal translation from Hindi to English means counterfeit or fake. The story is somewhat related to the actual meaning of its name. Sunny an artist, whose character is played by Shahid Kapoor is disgusted about the income disparity in India after he fails to maintain his grandfather’s printing press business. Then he decides to print fake currency and launder it in economic circulation facing constant threats and obstacles along the way with a local gangster Mansoor and a police official Michael. This web series will remind you of a movie by Shahid Kapoor that was released nearly a decade ago in 2010 named “Badmaash Company” where they found a loophole in business operations and are able to score a fortune by manipulating laws in their favor.

What is the story of Farzi season 1?

• Sunny is an artist and art student living with his maternal grandfather. In childhood, his father was troubled by him because he used to commit petty crimes therefore he abandoned him in a railway station. It was in the station where he met a guy named Feroz and they immediately shared a great bond. After many days later his grandfather visits the station to bring Sunny along with him. His grandfather too was a great artist but his financial conditions were under stress.
• His grandfather is the owner of a printing press Kranti that published a flop magazine. The press is under a mortgage where there is negligible revenue to cover up for the loan. The lender forces them to return the outstanding loan within a month’s time which further increases the stress on their savings. Sunny and Feroz then meet Anees who is a businessman and earns money by making counterfeit products. Sunny gets the idea of making a duplicate of the physical currency from his business. Sunny by profession is an artist. He tries to make the exact replica of the bank notes but his initial attempts fail miserably because the quality of the paper was substandard.
• Finally, he is able to find the best match for the currency paper by combing pages from a particular kind of magazine. Their first successful purchase from a counterfeit note was beer. They both are introduced to a contractor who gives them their first purchase of counterfeit currency lot for 2 crore rupees. To fulfill this huge order they require a larger team and resources. They involve a staff member from the Kranti Press in their deal and rob a factory that is well-equipped with a similar type of paper quality that is required to print the paper. The last thing they purchase is a printing machine that could print at greater speed.
• Another boss from this similar business is Mansoor, who is currently based in Jordon and has a narrow escape from the arrest in Nepal. Michael is an STF officer and leader of the CCFART who launched a mission in collaboration with the Nepal law enforcement agencies to nab Mansoor but fails. Michael is a brilliant lawyer but is struggling in his personal life and remaining sober. He is short-tempered and has hit many people while under the influence of alcohol. Pawan Gahlot is a finance minister and has been favored by Michael multiple times. Michael is able to convince him that he should help him in setting up a Counterfeiting & Currency Fraud Analysis & Research Team (CCFART) unit that will primarily focus on nabbing Fake currency gangster Mansoor. Most of the comic conversation in the series can be seen between the minister and Michael.
• On the other hand, Sunny pays restaurant bills in fake currencies that land up to Megha who is an RBI officer and later joins CCFART. She shares a romantic relationship with Sunny later as the story evolves. She is an expert and immediately detects the irregularities in the currency she received in exchange. She is the inventor of the CT600 device that can detect fake currency at the point of sale. Her mission is to make the sellers aware of this device and use it to detect counterfeit notes in collaboration with the government. Her mission does become successful in the future due to which Mansoor suffers heavy losses because his notes are being detected at each point of sale device.
• Mansoor soon comes to know about notes made by Sunny that can bypass the CT600 device and offers him a job to which Sunny and Feroz agree. He orders Sunny to make 12000 cr and launder it to India. Megha is able to detect that the notes she got at a restaurant and the new fake notes they received after seizing have been made by one person. They are able to track the source of the minister who had circulated those notes and reveal the truth about Sunny.
• Sunny manages to escape from the scene and goes underground. Mansoor on the other hand burns down his grandfather’s printing press which leads to the death of his grandfather as well. To avenge this act by Mansoor, Sunny kills the henchmen that have helped him expand his business in India and burn down the 12000 crore that he had laundered himself for Mansoor. The series ends with Feroz boarding the train and Sunny warns Mansoor he is soon coming for him to avenge his grandfather’s death. The season 2 shall begin the hunt down of Mansoor either in the hands of Sunny or Michael.

Shahid Kapoor as Sunny – We are not used to seeing Shahid Kapoor in such roles where he challenges the laws at each point. His general image is of a sweet loving character like Jeetu “Chup Chupke”, Aditya from “Jab We Met” or his other roles in “Vivah” and “Deewane Huye Pagal”. Apart from this, he has also played some extremely distinctive roles in movies like “Udta Punjab”, “Kabir Singh”, “Badmash Company”, and “Kaminey”. “Farzi” is his inaugural web series where he has really done justice to his role and work. Apart from this the teaser of his new movie “Bloddy Daddy” has also been released portraying him in a similar fashion.

Vijay Sethupati as Michael Vedanayagam – Our Tamil industry legend actor is seen here playing the role of Michael, who is an STF(Special Task Force) Officer and leads a counterfeiting and currency fraud analysis team. He is an experienced actor and has played numerous types of roles in the past. His iconic works include representing the eunuch in the “Super Deluxe” movie, an officer in the “Sethupathi” movie, and Sandhanam in the recently launched “Vikram” movie. Kay Kay Menon as Mansoor Dalal – The role of Jordon-based gangster Mansoor Dalal is portrayed by Kay Kay Menon, the mastermind of counterfeit currency circulation in India.  Kay Kay is not new to OTT platforms or web series. Bhuvan Arora as Firoz – Bhuvan is seen here playing the role of Sunny’s best friend and partner in crime.
