Bucky’s Captain America Death Scene Originally Had Winter Soldier Tease

Sebastian Stan reveals that there were originally plans for Captain America: The First Avenger to include a bigger tease for the Winter Soldier.

Sebastian Stan reveals that Bucky’s death scene in Captain America: The First Avenger was originally meant to have a bigger Winter Soldier tease. Three years after Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man became a big hit, essentially kick-starting the MCU as it exists today, Captain America got his own origin story movie as well, introducing audiences to Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and his best friend, Bucky Barnes, played by Stan. In one of the movie’s more shocking moments, Barnes falls from a mountainside train, seemingly to his death.

Although it seems like Barnes is well and truly dead, the character returns in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, albeit brainwashed by Hydra and wielding a cybernetic arm. Barnes eventually regains his memories and, despite causing a rift between Tony Stark and Rogers in Captain America: Civil War, eventually becomes an Avenger and helps defeat Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The character most recently appeared in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier opposite Anthony Mackie.

As part of a new career retrospective video for Vanity Fair, Stan reveals that Bucky’s death scene in Captain America: The First Avenger was originally meant to include a bigger tease for the character’s eventual evolution into the Winter Soldier. Stan explains that he always knew Bucky would fall from the train but that he was also supposed to be filmed with a green sleeve over his arm, hinting that audiences would’ve gotten to see the character missing his arm, thus giving a pretty big hint at what was to come. Check out Stan’s full comment below:

“I knew at the end of the story I was going to fall off this train and that I was going to be given this green sleeve, which would indicate that I would be losing this arm and then I could go into the Winter Soldier storyline. That was the only sort of indication I had that potentially I could be coming back, but no one had said anything to me. And then, basically, on the day when we were shooting that scene, they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re not going to do the green sleeve.’ And I just thought, ‘Oh, that’s it. I’m just going to die on that train.'”

Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes return to army base in Captain America The First Avenger

Considering Bucky’s Winter Soldier storyline in the comics, many fans would have immediately guessed what would be coming next had the character appeared without an arm. Although the means by which Bucky “dies” in the comics doesn’t include a train at all and instead involves an explosion on an airplane, the hint certainly would have been enough to suggest that Bucky would be returning as the Winter Soldier in a future movie. It’s not clear why the decision was made to cut the scene and Stan’s comments make clear that, after the decision had been made to make Bucky’s fate vaguer, there was no guarantee he would be coming back at all.

Ultimately, of course, the decision not to show Bucky missing his arm was probably the right one. Although it certainly would have been an exciting moment for fans, it ended up making the reveal in Captain America: The Winter Soldier all the more exciting. The decision to cut the scene could have been made for any number of reasons, including uncertainty regarding the future of the Winter Soldier as a character or simply to keep the focus of the movie more firmly on Steve Rogers and his personal journey. Thankfully, however, Stan did return as Bucky Barnes after Captain America: The First Avenger, giving fans a number of other highly regarded MCU storylines.
