Director James Gunn reveals that the cast and crew of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 listen to the film’s soundtrack while they work on set.
Director James Gunn has confirmed the cast and crew of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have listened to the film’s soundtrack on set. Well known for his use of carefully selected music throughout his films, the soundtrack for the original Guardians of the Galaxy film was given extra significance owing to the songs being directly linked to Star-Lord’s beloved Walkman and mix-tape. His last remaining link to Earth and his late mother, the songs which Peter Quill listened to were all recorded during the 1960s and 1970s and were selected by Gunn as “cultural reference points” designed to remind audiences of his Earthly origins.
At the end of the first film, it was revealed that the unopened present Quill’s dying mother had given him contained a second mix-tape that would go on to serve as the soundtrack to 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While Quill’s Walkman and tape would tragically end up being destroyed by Kurt Russell’s Ego during the sequel’s final act, at the film’s conclusion he was gifted with a Microsoft Zune that audiences find out was procured by Michael Rooker’s Yondu. Much as the Walkman was a symbol of Quill’s connection to his late mother, the new Zune would serve as a connection to Yondu as his primary father figure.
Given the significance of music in the first two films, one of the biggest questions fans of the series have for the new film is what the soundtrack will be like. Indeed, one fan recently reached out to Gunn via Twitter to ask exactly that, and Gunn replied “I love it. And we are playing it on set right this minute.” Check out his original reply below:
Of course, this is not the first time Gunn has played music from the soundtrack of his film on set to help get his cast and crew “find the perfect groove.” While filming both the first and second films, he would often play the songs he intended to accompany the finished scenes to help get them in the right frame of mind. From his Twitter response, it would seem this is a tried and tested technique he is intent on continuing with for his final Guardians of the Galaxy film.
The next big question is, of course, exactly which songs will feature in the finished soundtrack, but this is likely to be one that will not be answered until the film itself is released in May next year. One thing fans do know, however, is that the songs will not be modern, with Gunn shooting down rumors the soundtrack would feature songs taken from Quill’s time on Earth during the events of Avengers: Endgame. Whatever they may be, it would be a safe bet to assume that Gunn’s choice of soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be just as memorable as the first two installments in the series.
