Daniel Radcliffe Reveals He Used To Be Embarrassed Playing Harry Potter

Daniel Radcliffe reveals he used to be embarrassed playing Harry Potter and only came to think of it as “cool” when looking back on the work.

In a recent interview promoting The Lost City, Daniel Radcliffe revealed that he used to be embarrassed by playing Harry Potter. Radcliffe gained quick fame with the first Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in 2001, and his following only grew with the rest of the franchise. In the series, Radcliffe plays the titular Harry Potter, and he quickly became known for the iconic role. Since the last film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, was released in 2011, Radcliffe has worked on a wide range of projects, ranging from a horror film set in the Edwardian era to an anthology comedy series.

His most recent work is in the 2022 film, The Lost City, which he stars in alongside Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and a host of others. The film follows Bullock’s character, Loretta Sage, as a writer of popular adventure novels, and Tatum’s character, Alan, as the model to appear on the book’s cover. While on tour promoting the book, Loretta is kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire, played by Radcliffe, and Alan attempts to save her and become a real-life hero, rather than just in Loretta’s books.

While on a press tour for The Lost City, Radcliffe revealed to TooFab that he used to be embarrassed playing Harry Potter. The interviewer mentions that Alan is embarrassed by his first book cover then follows up by asking if Radcliffe or Bullock themselves can name any project they were embarrassed by or cynical about before it was embraced by fans. Radcliffe answers “I think, honestly when I was on Harry Potter and dressed as a schoolboy, it didn’t feel like the coolest thing in the world at the time. He follows up by saying, “It’s been, honestly, later that I’ve looked back and gone, ‘That was incredibly cool,’ and I do feel that now, for sure.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Though Radcliffe’s response would probably have shocked devoted fans of Harry Potter, his answer is understandable considering his age during the filming of the series. Radcliffe was just 12 years old when filming the first Harry Potter and essentially grew up on the sets. It makes sense that a boy going through puberty would not feel like an absolute stud dressing in long robes and school uniforms. Thankfully, Radcliffe did not let his embarrassment get in the way of making films that have undoubtedly become classics, and time has surely helped him warm up to the memory.

It is a bit refreshing to hear about Radcliffe’s discomfort during the time of the Harry Potter films. Many people align with the series because they relate to characters who feel a bit out of place in their situations. With this knowledge that even the famous Boy Who Lived felt awkward in his teens, fans have one more connection to make the world of Harry Potter feel real.
