With the arrival of Sister Sage and Firecracker in The Boys season 4, The Seven will have two new members and the series continues the show’s best comic book trick. Following the events of The Boys season 3, Vought’s flagship superhero team “The Seven” is currently down three members. It seems like it will not take long for Homelander to replace Starlight, Queen Maeve, and Black Noir, as two new members of The Seven have been officially announced by the show even though The Boys season 4 is still a long way off. However, there is a reason why The Boys wasn’t worried about “spoiling” the upcoming season with the Firecracker and Sister Sage announcements.
The Boys’ Firecracker and Sister Sage are original characters created for the show: Firecracker and Sister Sage never appear in The Boys comics. As such, apart from the official first look at Firecracker and Sister Sage, there is not much information regarding The Boys’ two new members of The Seven. Therefore, the two new supes continue The Boys‘ tradition of creating original characters rather than just doing a one-on-one adaptation from The Boys comics. In fact, while Amazon’s Prime Video’s The Boys obviously borrows a lot from the world and the characters seen in The Boys comics, the show has focused on telling new stories rather than simply recreating the ones from the comics.
The Boys’ Original Characters Make The Show More Unpredictable
The Boys’ unpredictability is perhaps the best thing about the show. Moments like Homelander killing Black Noir or Ryan choosing to align himself with his dad, for example, were a highlight of The Boys season 3 – and they do not originate from the comics. In fact, Black Noir’s story and identity were completely different from the comics while Homelander’s son was barely part of the books. Thanks to those changes from the source material, The Boys has created a show that can rarely be spoiled by something that happens in the comics. That is the complete opposite of other hit shows like Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, as those tend to follow the source material much more closely.
What Roles Will Sister Sage And Firecracker Play In The Boys Season 4?
According to The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke (via Twitter), Sister Sage and Firecracker are “very dangerous” and “just who Homelander needs”. Kripke’s comments suggest that Homelander himself will pick those two new members of The Seven, which makes sense considering how The Boys season 3 ended. Homelander had to deal with half of The Seven plotting against him throughout the entire season, and given how Homelander was not defeated and is still running things, it is only natural that he now replaces Maeve, Black Noir, and Starlight with supes he can trust on. Currently, only The Deep and A-Train are on Homelander’s side.
Even with the arrival of Sister Sage and Firecracker, The Seven will still be down one member. It will be interesting to see if The Seven’s final spot will to go an original character, or if The Boys season 4 will bring a supes from the comics. Even if the latter happens, names like Ryan, Soldier Boy, and Black Noir prove that The Boys can completely change a character even if they originate from the comics. It remains to be seen where Sister Sage and Firecracker’s powers will be, and most importantly, where will their allegiances lie during The Boys season 4.
